Around the year 200 A.D., Mayans of Central America are believed to have been chewing chicle-a gum resin. At the same time, native peoples in North America are thought to have been chewing resin from spruce trees.

In 1900, the first gumballs hit American shelves.

In 1928, the first bubble gum was invented by a 28-year-old accountant named Walter Diemer.

The first bubble gum cards were introduced in the 1930s. The pictures ranged from war heroes, to Wild West figures to pro-athletes.

During WWII, U.S. military personnel gave American chewing gum away to people they met overseas-helping make friends and spread the popularity of gum.

In 1964, NASA gave sugarless gum to astronauts on the Gemini space missions to help keep their teeth and gums healthy.

Often, terms such as steam power washers, vapor steam cleaners, and carpet steam cleaners are used interchangeably. While all these machines use hot water or high temperature steam for cleaning, they do not have the same applications or cleaning capacity.

Vapor Steam Cleaners

Also known as dry steam cleaners, these steam cleaning machines use dry vapor for cleaning tile, grout, ovens, stoves, restroom fittings, windows, mirrors, and floors.

High end steam cleaning machines emit vapor with as little as 5% water content, ideal for removing food remnants, stains, and similar matter from small areas. These machines are not suitable for heavy degreasing, slush removal, or for removing thick layers of chemicals, or oil. Nor are they right for cleaning large surfaces such as streets, exterior wall surface, walkways, and so on.

These upholstery steam cleaners can also used for spot cleaning carpets and upholstery, though they are not powerful enough to handle the high capacity requirements of cleaning entire carpeted areas. For handling full carpeted areas, a carpet steam cleaner is often preferred. The name of these machines is essentially a misnomer – as carpet steam cleaners only emit hot water temperatures up to 210F.

Some vapor steam cleaners may be fitted with chewing gum removal kits for removing chewing gum from concrete, hardwood, brick, and granite but they cannot clean entire surfaces. With special attachments, upholstery steam cleaners can be used for eliminating stains from couches, carpets, curtains, and more.

Vapor steamers do not have very high pressure levels. Some larger commercial models may reach pressure levels as high as 150 psi, ideal for extensive steam cleaning applications but not suitable for heavy grease, soot, or slush removal.

These steam cleaning machines require the use of detailing brushes, squeegees, and towels because they lack the high pressure required to forcefully dislodge dirt from the surface. Once steam softens the dirt, a detailing tool must be used to scrub it off the surface below. Most steam cleaning machines are therefore sold with an assortment of detailing brushes in different sizes, shapes, and materials. Look for machines with vacuum attachments, as well, for easier clean up and removal of residue.

Steam Pressure Washers

Unlike dry steam cleaners, the best steam pressure washers emit 100% wet steam. The steam is emitted at a very high pressure, usually around 1000-4000 psi. Most machines are tri-mode machines, meaning they can be used as cold water, steam or hot pressure washers. They emit very hot steam up to 330F, comparable with the temperature achieved by dry steam cleaning machines. The difference between the two machines is the water content and pressure at which steam is emitted. Such high pressure steam blasts away heavy grease and oil deposits for commercial and industrial environments, auto detailing, public works facilities, and other applications.

When selecting steam cleaning equipment for commercial areas, keep these differences in view to guarantee that you purchase the right machine for the job at hand. Always choose machines from reputable suppliers to ensure you receive a quality machine built to last.

Gumpak Canada are the Canadian Distributor for the Gumpak System, gum removal equipment that removes gum from a variety of surfaces such as pavements, pedestrian areas and roads. The Gumpak system is the ultimate chewing gum removal device; efficient, environmentally friendly and highly mobile. It is a huge improvement over traditional steam cleaning machines.

The Gumpak Gum Removal equipment is a compact kit comprising a carbon fibre lance, and a high visibility rucksack containing the LPG, rechargeable battery, pump, and the gum removal chemical.

The Gumpak machine is superior to other methods of gum removal. The whole system is self contained within a rucksack making it much more mobile and easier to operate.

Gumpak Canada supplies the consumables for the Gumpak System in day box kits, which provide enough materials for 6-8 hours continuous chewing gum removal

Traditionally, electric radiators were used to provide heat in parts of the home where the standard central heating couldn’t reach, such as conservatories and garages. Electric storage radiators are often seen as a real replacement to traditional central heating systems and can heat a whole house.

Traditionally, electric radiators were used to provide heat in parts of a house where the standard central heating couldn’t reach, such as garages and conservatories. Electric radiators are now a practical replacement to traditional hot water based heating systems and can be used to heat an entire home.

Why is this?

Older, conventional storage heaters were often large, bulky and unattractive. Depending on the design, they also wasted energy by pushing the warm air up to the ceiling. Modern electric radiators have surface fluting which radiates from a larger surface area. The fluting draws in cold air from the floor, heats it, then distributes it throughout the room.

They are extremely easy to fit. Most modern electric radiators simply require plugging into a standard domestic electrical socket. They come in a wide variety of sizes so they can fit into almost any space, and also they don’t even have to be wall mounted as a large number of them have the option of being mobile on castors.

Installation costs are also much lower than standard central heating. As there is no need for a boiler and hot water pipes running through the house, electric radiators are much faster and less labour intensive to fit than cast iron radiators.

One massive advantage of modern electric radiators is how straightforward they are to maintain. There is no need to bleed air out of the system, they are not effected by cold weather and can’t leak. All they require is the occasional wipe in connection with a moist cloth to remove dust.

Electric radiators can also be controlled individually and provide heat instantly, so you only need to turn on the radiators that are required, when they are required. This can help to lower utility bills by not heating rooms and spaces that don’t require it. When used in conjunction with modern wireless thermostats, the temperature in different rooms and spaces in the house can be individually controlled.

Electric storage radiators are often more energy efficient compared to cast iron radiators. No energy is wasted in taking the heat to the radiator unlike the energy that heats up hot water pipes. Near enough all the electricity supplied to them is used to generate heat and there is not much waste. Less waste means less power is needed to provide the same level of heat. Low input storage heaters can reduce the energy intake by 50%.

Modern slimeline electric storage heaters are well designed and efficient making them a perfect replacement for old unattractive night storage heaters. If used with electronic control systems, they typically significantly cheaper to run compared to an old night storage heater.

Electric radiators are a great solution to keep your house warm as well as reduce energy bills. They are very versatile and provide a high level of safety, reliability, cleanliness and comfort that is unmatched by any other heating system.

Here are a few simple pointers to hopefully make the process of booking a childs party entertainer a little more straightforward.

> Make sure you understand what the quoted fee covers.

> Although a self-employed children’s entertainer does not have to have a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check, almost all professional entertainers will be able to supply you with one. There are similar checks in countries outside the UK.

> Make sure the entertainer sends a confirmation letter or contract that clearly sets out the costs, schedule and also commitments of the entertainer and booker.

> Many childrens entertainers require a certain number of adults to be present so that children are properly supervised. It is important to know what happens if the audience is larger than expected.

> Check if there are any optional extras and the costs involved. Make sure they are suitable for all the children at the party. Examples include balloon models and party bags with toys and/or sweets.

Smoke detectors give an early warning of a fire giving people more time to escape and get to safety.

Detector systems can be fully integrated with automatic fire barriers to activate when heat and fumes set them off. Automatic fire curtains descend in the event of a fire to protect escape routes and slow down the spread of fire.

The number and positioning of alarms is important and depends on the size and layout of the building. Even so, a fire could break out anywhere, so generally the more detectors and alarms the better.

There should be at least one smoke detector on every floor. For maximum protection, an alarm should be in every room, especially if there any large electrical appliances – for example, televisions in bedrooms.

If detectors are not fitted in each room, position them in a hallway between rooms and on any landings.

When fitting alarms, they need to be tested to ensure they can be heard throughout the building when doors are closed, especially in the bedrooms.

Smoke detectors can be found at most Do It Yourself shops and at larger super markets. In the UK, smoke detectors should conform to British Standard BS 5446 Part 1, and be stamped with the well-known Kite mark.

It is important that smoke alarms and heat detectors are tested regularly (for example, every week) and are in good order.

Plan an Escape Route

Planning how to escape from a burning building is a simple measure that can save lives.

Ensure that everyone in the building is involved and is aware of the plan. For example, children, relatives (especially the elderly), lodgers and guests.

The main exits are usually the best escape routes but think about a second escape route in case the main one cannot be used.

Once the plan exists, explain it to everyone in the household and practise it.

Keep a torch accessible to help you escape at night and ensure everyone know where keys are so doors can be unlocked quickly.

Decrease Fire Risks

A number of simple measures can prevent fires from starting and help you escape burning buildings.

* Ensure electrical appliances are fused correctly.

* Don’t cover electrical leads with carpet or rugs.

* Ensure moveable radiators away from anything flammable and make sure children and pets are kept away from them. Never leave electrical heaters on when you are asleep or go out.

* Fit smoke detectors on every floor of your house.

* Make sure your address is near the phone so that children and guests can read it out to the emergency services.
