Here are a few simple pointers to hopefully make the process of booking a childs party entertainer a little more straightforward.

> Make sure you understand what the quoted fee covers.

> Although a self-employed children’s entertainer does not have to have a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check, almost all professional entertainers will be able to supply you with one. There are similar checks in countries outside the UK.

> Make sure the entertainer sends a confirmation letter or contract that clearly sets out the costs, schedule and also commitments of the entertainer and booker.

> Many childrens entertainers require a certain number of adults to be present so that children are properly supervised. It is important to know what happens if the audience is larger than expected.

> Check if there are any optional extras and the costs involved. Make sure they are suitable for all the children at the party. Examples include balloon models and party bags with toys and/or sweets.

Smoke detectors give an early warning of a fire giving people more time to escape and get to safety.

Detector systems can be fully integrated with automatic fire barriers to activate when heat and fumes set them off. Automatic fire curtains descend in the event of a fire to protect escape routes and slow down the spread of fire.

The number and positioning of alarms is important and depends on the size and layout of the building. Even so, a fire could break out anywhere, so generally the more detectors and alarms the better.

There should be at least one smoke detector on every floor. For maximum protection, an alarm should be in every room, especially if there any large electrical appliances – for example, televisions in bedrooms.

If detectors are not fitted in each room, position them in a hallway between rooms and on any landings.

When fitting alarms, they need to be tested to ensure they can be heard throughout the building when doors are closed, especially in the bedrooms.

Smoke detectors can be found at most Do It Yourself shops and at larger super markets. In the UK, smoke detectors should conform to British Standard BS 5446 Part 1, and be stamped with the well-known Kite mark.

It is important that smoke alarms and heat detectors are tested regularly (for example, every week) and are in good order.

Plan an Escape Route

Planning how to escape from a burning building is a simple measure that can save lives.

Ensure that everyone in the building is involved and is aware of the plan. For example, children, relatives (especially the elderly), lodgers and guests.

The main exits are usually the best escape routes but think about a second escape route in case the main one cannot be used.

Once the plan exists, explain it to everyone in the household and practise it.

Keep a torch accessible to help you escape at night and ensure everyone know where keys are so doors can be unlocked quickly.

Decrease Fire Risks

A number of simple measures can prevent fires from starting and help you escape burning buildings.

* Ensure electrical appliances are fused correctly.

* Don’t cover electrical leads with carpet or rugs.

* Ensure moveable radiators away from anything flammable and make sure children and pets are kept away from them. Never leave electrical heaters on when you are asleep or go out.

* Fit smoke detectors on every floor of your house.

* Make sure your address is near the phone so that children and guests can read it out to the emergency services.
